Places to visit in Slovenia: Explore the stunning Slovenian lakes

Slovenia might have popped on your radar due to its world-famous attractions like the spectacular Postojna Cave, the vibrant capital Ljubljana, or the postcard-worthy Lake Bled. But did you know that, in addition to Lake Bled, Slovenia is home to a number of awe-inspiring lakes that deserve a top spot on every outdoor lover's travel itinerary?

Beyond Bled: Uncover Slovenia’s Most Striking Lakes

From natural to man-made, from well-visited to off-the-beaten-path, from turquoise to emerald – considering its petite size, Slovenia is a country abundant in lakes. Keep reading to discover some of the most stunning ones.

Lake Bled

Let's start with the crown jewel among the Slovenian lakes – the renowned Lake Bled. This emerald, dreamlike lake features a tiny island with a church and looks like something straight out of a fairytale. Adding to its undeniable magic is a clifftop castle overlooking the lake you can visit and is also a perfect viewpoint. We suggest you hire a traditional pletna (boat) and row to the island or hike up to Ojstrica for glorious views of the lake.

Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is located close to Lake Bled but is not any less striking than its world-famous neighbor. Its wilderness will appeal to those who seek less touristy and more peaceful vibes. This glacial lake, nestled in the Triglav National Park, is surrounded by forested peaks and is perfect for anyone seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences. Bonus: You can swim in the lake, which is a lifesaver in the hot summer months. Take a cable car to Vogel for the unparalleled views of the lake and surrounding mountains or, if you're up for a challenge, hike up to the beautiful Savica Waterfall – scenic views guaranteed.

Lake Jasna

This turquoise lake is located near the alpine resort town of Kranjska Gora and is a perfect starting point for further travels in the region. Lake Jasna is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and magnificent mountainous backdrop. If you're looking for a relaxing spot or a place to take fantastic travel photos, Lake Jasna is your best bet.

Lake Zelenci

Nothing proves the famous saying “nomen est omen” like this lake – its name comes from the striking green color of its water (“zelena” means green in Slovenian). Located near the Italian and Austrian border, this surreal natural pool – Lake Zelenci is technically a spring at the source of the Sava Dolinka River – is perfect for a short detour, taking some spectacular photos, and exploring its rich flora and fauna.

The Seven Triglav Lakes

If hiking or photography is your thing, then the Valley of the Seven Triglav Lakes is your next big thing. This glacial valley is one of the most incredible places to visit in Slovenia. It’s paradise for hikers and nature lovers and will spellbind you with its wilderness and seven lakes that change hues with the shifting light. Each lake has its own character, but all of them are nothing short of magnificent. Pro tip: spend the night in the mountain hut Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih and start your day with glorious views.

Krn Lake (Krnsko jezero)

Off-the-beaten-path lovers, this one is for you! Krn Lake (Krnsko jezero), the green paradise surrounded by wilderness and mountain peaks, is the biggest lake in the Slovenian mountains and is reachable only by hiking for approximately 2.5-3 hours from the nearest trailhead. It lies at a height of 1,394 metres and trust us, it is worth every step.

Planšarsko jezero

Planšarsko jezero is another hidden gem, nestled in the remote Jezersko Valley. Although it is not a natural lake, it is just as beautiful. The view of the snowy caps, the green water that reflects the mountain peaks, and the serenity – this heart-shaped little lake is perfect for a short stop or a relaxing walk around the lake through the surrounding forests. Bonus: You can try some amazing local dishes at the restaurant at the lake.
